Why this masochist will get Smart WiFi

Despite all the flak that Smart WiFi is getting from disappointed customers, I’m jumping the gun and getting a Smart WiFi subscription.
Two Three things:
1.) where’s the promo?
2.) why am I doing it?
3.) a theory on Smart WiFi feedback
Where’s the promo?
I expected to do a cash out of only P988. But when I inquired, I was told that there’s an additional installation fee of P1,000. The customer service representative said that the “waived installation fee” initial promo ended last Christmas.
I asked my reliable bubwit. He advised me to wait. I’m told that there’s an upcoming Smart WiFi promo this January.
Why am I doing it?
Why am I getting Smart WiFi despite all the negative feedback about the service?
a.) lack of better and quicker alternatives (our new home doesn’t have phonelines)
b.) I want to experience Smart WiFi first hand
c.) I have this theory …
Theory on Smart WiFi feedback
I have this theory that Smart WiFi is getting more flak than it actually deserves. I think that we’re reading a lot of negative comments because it is the dis-satisfied customer that looks for venues to air their grievances.
On the other hand, the users who are pleased with the service — they generally are less noisy.
For example, I visited a friend who has Smart WiFi. He’s happy about it. Did he go looking for websites to tell people that he’s happy with Smart WiFi? No. He kept quiet. Why bother joining forums about Smart WiFi?
So I’d like to test Smart WiFi and have my own opinion. And I’ll make my opinion known whether the feedback is good or bad.
Let’s see if my theory settles well with the rest of the Smart WiFi world, including the dissatisfied subscribers.

Hey Emman! good to see you here!
That’s a good statistic to benchmark with.
But knowing your background, i’m sure your officemates are among the technical crop of customers who have a tendency to be more critical of a service like Smart WiFi.
I spoke to another friend who isn’t techie at all. He’s happy with Smart WiFi — but that doesn’t mean he has 100% up time or 256kbps++ bandwidth.

HI Edong,
Good luck! I do know that almost all providers here have a lot to be desired. YOu will also hear a lot of flak from other providers…. So it is really just mean choosing the lesser of the problematic providers (grin)…

It’s almost the same as PLDT myDSL-W diba? We’ve subscribed to that more than a month ago, hanggang ngayon wala pa rin. Any idea how I can get those peeps from PLDT to work their asses off already? Tried 171 and their Business Centers already. Apparently since the service is new they don’t know what to do. Bummer!

Hi JM! Musta ka na? Musta isko? Yeah, I hear rants about both PLDT-DSL and Smart WiFi.
JM, try Mig’s (or is it Abe’s) tip: call PLDT myDSL *sales* or *marketing*. Yung mga yun, alisto kung sumagot ng telepono, mapang-asikaso pa. sabihin mo mag-u-upgrade ka (kunwari) ng plan.
Mukhang agree ako kay Wilson: we choose the one that will give us less headaches (getting headaches will be a given).

Hi ivy,
Short answer: no.
Strictly speaking, DSL is a technology that passes through telephone lines.
But with all the branding gimmicks of our telcos, they have muddled the real meanings of technical terms like DSL (like “myDSL-W”) and WiFi (”Smart WiFi”).
What do you call it? frankly, I don’t know. Matanong nga si Migs ( http://paraz.com )…

i’m a resigned TSR who can no longer endure the incompetence and rotten system of smart wifi.. and i have to spill out some facts about the company, and i’m not proud either for being a former employee of smart wifi.. currently, smart wifi is continously hiring their so called “TSR’s”, and their target by the end of february is to have 280 Tech agents to accomodate their irate customers.. instead fixing their internet connection, they have just hired a couple of new buffoons who aren’t computer graduates.. more revelations to come..
Resigned TSR on 5 Feb 2006 at 3:30 pm: 23
we’re not even allowed to give solutions if there’s an ongoing technical activity in the basestation.. meridian has told us that the rehoming request should come from our clients… and also, i’m disgusted on their so called Higher Technical Crew.. most of them are not “techie”, they don’t even know how to configure a router or just pinging the loopback address, damn, ang bobo nila talaga.. that’s why they’re called our “higher technical crew” and they should know these things.. they’re so pathetic.. alam ko operations sa loob ng smart wifi and i’m posting these things to help you guys… why am i spilling these things out? ‘coz even i am disgusted with their customer services …
ka edong on 5 Feb 2006 at 11:21 pm: 24
Hello Resigned TSR,
I see you’re spilling your guts because of disgust.
What would be interesting to hear from you is something constructinve; some helpful insights that could help the company (meridian, smart, pldt) improve their service.
It would also be interesting to hear some insider information that will help the customers. Like contact persons for escalation of concerns, managers names etc.
These are just ideas. General thought: let’s be constructive, let’s find ways to help Smart WiFi subscribers.
Thanks for sharing, RTSR.

The problem here is that subscribers are locked into the service for 1-year. Dapat meron clause doon sa contract na kung hindi ka satisfied e my option ka na i-cancel ang service. Biro mo, tied up ka for one year with a rotten service. I subscribed to the service to replace my current broadband connection since WIFI cost less (Php800 difference). But my broadband connection is more than 5x better. With sustained d/l rate of 200+ kbps with nearly no downtime.
I tried to send an e-mail to their tech support but my e-mail just bounced back.

hi 3g4y56,
kung dumami ang subscribers sa lugar niyo, tama ka, baka-bumagal ang signal. pero di pa siguro mangyayari in the near future.
I heard from my reliable bubwit that theoretically a cellsite’s bandwidth is limitless. All they need to do is add additional cables to increase the bandwidth.
Of course that will be the bottleneck. When they need to add more cables, tulad ng halimbawa ni 3g4y56 na marami nang subscribers sa isang lugar — how long will it take Smart to add cables to the nearby cellsite?
wondering …

As far as I know, meridian used to give SLA (service level agreement) along with the service contracts. The clause states that if internet downtime exceeds X number of hours per month or % of downtime exceeds uptime in a month, then the subscriber has the right to pre-terminate the contract without further obligation. Since Smart wifi actually use meridian as their internet backbone, then why shouldn’t they give the same SLA to wifi subscribers? This way we can pre-terminate the subscription if downtime is very consistent.

I’m a Smart WiFi subscriber myself since March 2006. I’ve heard a lot of comments about Smart WiFi, good and bad. What makes me decide to subscribe?
Three options:
1) Globelines broadband – I inquire about this service since December and waited for almost 4 months for this to be available in our area. Eh wala pa rin.
2) PLDT myDSL - Based on my experience eh ok tong service. We are using it for more or less two years (I think) at work. Sa umpisa for about 3 months ata eh medyo di stable ang connection and yung speed eh wala sa package. Pero ngayon eh satisfied kami. The only thing na ayaw ko lang eh first dapat may phoneline ka then dapat nakapangalan sayo, kung hinde dapat may letter of authorization ka. Maraming dapat.
3) Smart WiFi – Wala masyadong requirements. Apply ka tapos bayad.
Mabilis naman ang installation walang hassle.
By the way meron nga palang akong 2 ka officemate na naka Smart WiFi . yung isa eh very very disappointed and di other one is very much satisfied. So very confusing di ba? yung isa eh medyo techie & yung isa naman eh for the sake of surfing the net lang.
What I notice for almost 2 weeks being a Smart WiFi subscriber.
More testing pa. As of now satisfied pa ako.
Share nyo on how you benchmark yung Smart WiFi. “Scientific Method ha walang sabi-sabi” post nyo nga pala yung location nyo. Me LAS PINAS.
Mr. Technology Man on 9 Apr 2006 at 12:07 am: 35
I’m disappointed right now. (really really disappointed). I’m getting average speeds of 40~45 kbps, 70~85 kbps. not like yesterday, having 350~400+ kbps. not very consistent. sana wag magdown this coming holiday. bad trip if that happens. sana 24/7 ang support no holidays. nyahahaha.
Mr. Technology Man on 9 Apr 2006 at 12:53 am: 36
It’s 1:50am right now April 9th, connection average speed around 50~60 kbps & 80~90 kbps . I Therefore conclude at this moment na this result was due to the fluctuation sa banwidth ko. Parang yung sa ER yung meter ko. parang heartbeat ang dating.
Mr. Technology Man on 9 Apr 2006 at 2:35 pm: 37
For those of you ppl na wondering how i benchmark my Smart WiFi “BROADBAND” Connection. This is how i do it. First of all download the AnalogX NetStat Live from www.analogx.com under the networking category. Then find a site that has a 150+MB downloadable file that site must be reliable a site. download it using a download manager to maximize your current connection. run it for about 30mins to 1hr to get the best reading possible and by the way before doing so configure your TCP/IP Interface on the Netstat Live select the IP that is connected to Smart WiFi Canopy and in Display values use BITS not BYTES. BITS are in small letter ‘b’ and Bytes are in Capital Letter ‘B’ so you dont get confused. I believe that the Smart WiFi packages are in BITS (128kbps & 256~384kbps) and check if the reading has a current steady stream in the average line. as of now i’m averaging 105.8kb running @ 33mins, time 14:35, April 9th. plano ko nga eh magbench mark for one week and get the 90th percentile. which determines kung “most of the time on what speed my connection falls to”. open to comments? is this a scientific method approach? what do you think guys & gals? oo nga pala ang package ko eh yung 256~384kbps.so yung reading ko kanina eh way below on what i subscribe. let’s find out if this often happens.

Mr.Techno, just to let you know, i didn’t have any internet connection at all last holy week. Pa iba-iba sinasabi ng mga customer service nila sa *1888, pero when i went to their smart wireless center umamin na may problem sa base station.
So if you really want to know the status of your connection, don’t call *1888, they’re all liars. Personally go to their outlet.
By the way i always record my downtime using analogx, ping results from lan card-antenna-base station so that i have references for my rebates.
Kung meron lang alternative na ISP who can install within 1 week in almost all areas, with at least 128 kbps, and easier access and honest customer service, lipat kaagad ako.

I’m a Smart Wifi subscriber for over a year now and a satisfied one before the launching of SmartBro… now I’m disgusted because of slower connection and longer downtime…It’s more appropriate to name it SmartBroken. Siguro sa dami ng nag-subscribe ay kinulang na ang kanilang bandwidth… (not a very technical guy).

this is an email from a friend with regard sa service ng smart wi-fi.
so you’re a smart wi-fi subscriber.
just wanna share my bad experience with regard sa smart wi_fi.
i requested last november 11, 2005 an upgrade from 128kbps to 384 kbps and the guy from wireless center (sm north edsa) said that the new speed would take effect on my next billing date which is 15th of december.
to my surprise, on the billing statement that i received (for november bill), i was asked to pay the new rate which is 988 even though i haven’t availed of it yet!
my antenna was replaced to canopy type only on the 27th of december to activate the new connection speed (384kbps), so that means that i don’t have the new connections yet.
what comes next is a never ending agony. i got an intermittent connection from the day my antennae was replaced. i called the technical support and the billing section in order to have it fixed and asked for a rebate on the first billing and the days in which i have an intermittent connections or no connections at all.
TWO(2) months later, on february 8, 2006 my canopy antenna was repositioned and replaced. that was the only time that my connection was made to work in good order.
comes april, my connection was cut for unpaid bills daw! my husband complained for why should we pay the days that our connection was intermittent or no connections and the answer from the billing section is that our rebates is still being facilitated.
OMG, this thing have been reported to them since december and until this date, nothing has been done yet and worse, humiliating experience is that my connection is redirected.
so, if i were you, better terminate the service or mag-sisi ka sa huli.
caloy on 12 May 2006 at 7:46 pm: 46

unfortunately kung may bagyo affected din yung connection, kasi radio frequency din gamit from your antenna to the base stations. that’s the downside for having a faster installation time than dsl’s. Ironically parang may bagyo pa yung commercial ng Smart Bro nila.
Tama ka dapat sinasabi nila in advance na meron technical difficulties. Total Smart din naman sila, isang text lang yan from their customer service di ba?

Aficial from Calasiao, Pangasinan.
I visited by family in Panagasinan for a week started June 2, 2006, They have Smart WI-FI, now Smart Bro. I had to work, so I dialed in to our server in Daly City, California, via VPN. I was so shocked, the network was up the entire week I was there. MY VPN connection was up 95% of the time (approximately). Prior to this, the network was down about 3-4 times a week. Overall, I am a happy user; my boss was happy as I was able to work remotely.
But prior to this I had terrible experience with PLDT. I placed the order, and after waiting for about 2 months, all I got was promises and excuses form PLDT Dagupan City branch to install the antenna. I needed to keep my sanity, so I decided to report non-performance to PLDT corporate. After two e-mails, within 2 weeks, the antena was installed. For the first 3 months, the network was down2-3 times per week. But now, it has improved. I am now able to contact my family via Skype with clearly (video and audio).

Are there any Smart Bro subscribers in the Philippines who subcribe to a VOiP service with Vonage? Vonage is based in the USA. I’d like to know if it is compatible with Smart Bro.
I brought with me in Jan 2006 a Vonage supplied VOiP ready wireless phone router and was not able to make it work. I tried to install with the assistance of a PLDT and Linksys customer service reps, but to no avail. I get mixed reports - others say it should work, and others say not. Any input from Vonage VOiP user will be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have a neighbor, an American based in the Philippines, and a sys-ad at that. He says the hardware of Smart WiFi is (almost) identical to vonage. I’m sure he doesn’t have the hardware to prove that the antenna would work in the Phils, but he claims it’s the same technology.
hope that helps.

im guessing the satisfied ones aren’t gamers? or i could be wrong. smartbro just doesn’t give satisfactory results when it comes to some online games…

for regular browsing or email, smart bro is good enough if you dont have much of a choice. but if you’re into downloading or gaming, forget it. smartbro disconnects very frequently

Smart Wi-Fi user here for almost 15 months, my average download rate was 30KB/s something, then I once had a problem connecting and accessing the w-gateway. So I called their hotline and within just a week, a crew came to my house to replace the antenna and update the settings. Later I realized the speed went up, and now my download rate is stable 60KB/s sometimes it tops 68-ish… not bad for 988/month.

there’s a success story! just one of a few being *reported* .
many more success stories out there are *not* being told.
