Singapore WiFi hotspot hunting

Singapore is such an Internet connected country. Pagdating pa lang sa Changi airport, they have so many Internet kiosks with free Internet access. Most of these kiosks allow users 15 minutes of Internet at a time. Want more, just log back in.

There were times that we neeeeeded to get on the Internet. One option was to use one of the Internet Vendo machines sprinkled around the city center, usually in indoor tourist areas.

Another option was to go sniffing for WiFi hotspots. When Maya and I were in Singapore, we brought along Fiona, Maya’s laptop. One early morning (the morning we missed our flight! hahaha!), we desperately had to get online. We brought along Fiona and walked to the nearby mall at Dhoby Ghaut. And viola, we had an open and free WiFi hotspot. A handful of them, in fact.

It was our cousin who gave us that tip. He says that most anywhere there are cafes or in any of the malls, you’ll find WiFi hotspots. It’s just a matter of finding open and free hotspots and it isn’t hard to find.

I guess the hotspot owners just don’t mind. Most everybody else is Internet connected, anyway. My cousin continues to share that it’s so easy to get an Internet connection (unlike the horror stories we hear about Smart “wifi” in the Philippines).

My cousin says you can make a call to the telco or cable company and they’ll have your apartment connected with broadband within 24 hours. It’s even so affordable that some people get a broadband Internet connection in each room of the house!

Now, which website would I visit when using the bathroom ….

      slashdot.org in the bathroom?! hrm…

doesn’t that open your neighbors (and yourself) to hackers, if any? Or are hackers too afraid of getting caught by big brother?
