Smart 3G network problems?

July 27th, 2007 | by ka edong |

Anybody experience 3G network problems on Smart lately?

I was at a Smart wireless center yesterday. A customer service assistant approached me asking me if I needed any help with GPRS/MMS (etc.) configurations on my phone.

I said yes, I wanted to get help distinguishing whether I was connected via GPRS or 3G. (I have a new phone, Liway, and am still getting acquainted with her).

She fumbled a bit (just a bit), said there were some 3G network problems that came up just that day (July 26) which could explain some of the problems I might have been encountering (I was thinking: “what problems?”). Then later, she excused herself, said she needed to go back to her station.

      hey esti,

was wondering about that. kasi in some countries, pinapalitan ang SIM para maka-access sa 3G network. Sa atin, we didn’t go through that phase. Baka ito na iyon …

too bad walang backward compatibility yung bagong 3G SIM with the multi-line.

      esti,

I got that same problem, too: getting “Not authorized” displayed when viewing web pages. Hay… But accessing through the phone seemed to be fine.

At least, that was after I deleted all previous setup and going through “SET 3G ” again. More hay…

      ka edong,

switched to a 3g sim the other day. they have me sign a waiver that if their sim does not work with my 5110 (non-3g) then it is not their problem. i, not wanting conflict that day obliged to sign it. also i didn’t even push my luck with getting the sim for free. heck i just need my service restored to normalcy.

@ian, with my problem even in the phone it tells me of “not authorized”. weirdness.

also while using my phone as modem i often get disconnected.

world of warcraft doesn’t work (even torrents, i think doesn’t) with smart 3g.

my new operator now displays: “smart gold 3g”, wonder if the signal-less days are really over.

      Hi

I saw this link from smart:
      http://www.smart.com.ph/Buddy/promos/Smart3G_HighSpeedInternet.htm

So I did try it but I never got to connect. I am trying to access the net using a k800i connected to the PC via USB cable. The fone can surf to the smart’s wap site but it is so damn slow!

After doing the connection, I was prompted that I am already connected to the internet at 9xxxxx kbps.

I tried to launch the browser and tough luck, no internet connection. I did set up a DNS,
      Preferred DNS server: 202.57.96.3
      Alternate DNS server: 202.57.96.4

Any other thing I forgot to configure?

Btw, I followed the instruction from this website:
      http://www.unlawyer.net/?p=310

Guys, help naman po. I did call smart hotline and the guy on the other end of the line asked me to go the nearest smart office and have the phone activated.

Seems weird because it was never mentioned in their website. I mean their website even says “try it now, here’s how”.

      Thanks.

Esti, after using the 3G enabled SIM..how did it go? How much did you pay for the sim and are you obligated to give the your old sim?

      Hi Waltz,

I can access smart 3g without performing the extra step of defining DNS servers.

The activation is number 1 in the “try it now here’s how” of the said link you gave. you have to save the settings that smart will giveto you once you key in KEY 3G K800i (i’m gueesing here)

About the 3g enabled sim, it is the standard sim they’re giving out to smart gold subs and i think it’s only available to smart gold. But having it is really a relief for i am no longer disconnected at long periods of time.

I paid 302.50 for the sim and they got the old sim from me when i upgraded.

If you are successful in connecting to SMART 3g, it will show you a connection of 460kbps. And sometimes i get to download the whole episode of naruto using 3g :D

      Hi Esti
I was able to save the setting from Smart and I am able to access the Smart page on the celfone.

I called up smart hotline, according to the girl on the other end, there is no such thing as 3G sim daw, according to her, old and new sim are just the same. It is just a matter of enabling the 3G on the phone.

      Parang nalilito na tuloy ako.

What I wanted is to use the celfone to acces the net using my pc through the usb cable.

Hope you can guide me if I am not asking too much. Here is what I did.

Set 3G on my phone and tested it, was able to access smart site on the phone.

Connect fone to the USB Port of the PC and set it as phone mode and I went to the communication and chose USB internet, enabled it.

I created a dialup shortcut and on the properties, I entered the DNS setting (no name and password)

I dialed and connected but there is no internet activity.

Hope you spare a few mins with me and help me configure it. Thanks.

by the way, my email is walter_co@yahoo.com. Thanks.

      now i know the problem.

what i do when i connect using the usb cable is, since i have a nokia n70, connect to the internet via the nokia pc suite. try and look if there is accompanying software with your phone (i’m not familiar with those types). i don’t create extra dial up settings as these also don’t work with me.

as for the girl who answered you that there is not such a thing as a 3g sim, did you get her name? the 3g sim is for gold subs only, maybe you dialled the hotline for buddy perhaps that explains the incompetence of the csr. :D

      hope this helps :D

      Esti,

Finally I got it working. First time I tried it there was nothing wrong with my procedure, the problem was I cannot ping the DNS and I have no internet. Last night I was really pissed and I badly want to try the internet using my PC via celfone and poof! The damn thing worked!

I did not connect via a dial-up, I just enabled the USB internet and fired up the browser. I was connected at 10mbps only and the upload was 118kbps (using speedtest.net). By the way, I live in the vicinity of Grace Park Caloocan City.

While surfing the net, I ran a continous ping on the DNS (1 and 2) plus the proxy. The result is intermittent. There are timeouts.

I also removed the proxy from the browser and it worked but sad to say, I have to reload the page everytime.

Yahoo Messenger also keeps on disconnecting. All along I though it would act as if I were connected via dial-up but gosh, seems the 3G is not that efficient.

I never got the girl’s name. Also, I think Smart should RE-ORIENT all their CSR. The last time I spoke to her, she said I should bring the fone to the nearest smart office to have the phone configured by their technical people. The CSR does not seem to know what they are talking about. Smart should at least show the CSRs the actual function, usage, and procedure that is to be done in order for it to work. At least 1 for every phone brand just for them to have an idea where or what part of the phone should be configured.

Oh well, to be perfectly honest you and the forums were more helpful compared to Smart’s CSR. Maybe their CSR is good on some other functions but definitely not on the field.

I am thinking of trying globe and compare which is better. Another adventure for me coz I’ll be using a different fone w/o any USB cable. Tsk tsk, poor me. Hahah..sakit na naman sa ulo.

      Thanks Esti.

sir walter how did you enable the usb internet? is it via pc suite?

i have n70 phone with smart buddy sim (enabled 3g), dku-2 cable, nokia pc suite installed in pc. na-set up na po nababasa na ng pc yung phone.

then sinunod ko lahat ng instructions sa http://www.unlawyer.net/?p=310, entered the settings then pressed dial in the network connection dialog box. Ang error na nareceive ko ‘Error 678: Remote computer not responding…’ or something like that.

did i do something wrong or missed something?

      esti,

      hth.

btw, standard reply ng smart yung 72 hours lol. daming beses ko na narinig yun. kahit minsan sasabihin nila 72 hours, only to find out na ako pala ang may maling setting kaya di gumagana service nila. it’s all CSR manual snippets. hihihihi

      i’m using a motorola razr v3x. i sent SET 3G V3x to 211 and recevied a browser setting.

I connnect v3x to the laptop thru usb cable. Hit the “Internet Connection” at the Motorola Phone Tools menu( just like Nokia PC Suite)

Tough luck, im receiving an error:

“The GPRS connection could not be established, make sure you have subscribed to the DATA option and that the GPRS network is accessible…”

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

nyark. no idea when it comes to a motorola phone, but here are my suggestions/suspects/whatever you might call em:

      1. when you received the browser setting, make sure you saved it. (happened to me before, got it but didn’t save it)

      2. make sure that your phone is set to dual mode (in nokia phones we can switch it to gsm or dual mode — this means ordinary signal or 3g signal) but regardless of mode you should have net access (the ordinary signal’s net access being slower)

      3. make sure you have 3g signal or even the ordinary signal (which i think you would have, running out of ideas)

      4. make sure you have load or your account is not redirected.

      5. if all else fails try googling for answers then i suggest you don’t waste your time calling the hotline (they don’t help so much) if you rather have to contact smart, try to bring the phone to the wireless center (if you have a laptop, the better)

btw, you can access the internet via the phone’s internet browser?

Hmmmm.. wonder why yours doesn’t work. Which flavor of Vwisita do you have?

I was running Nokia PC Suite on vista to connect to the web a couple weeks ago (before switching to smart bro).

      My Phone’s Nokia N70 btw.

Maybe try a Device Driver Update? Because sometimes a driver update for my Nokia N70 comes from Windows Update (not from Nokia Software).

      Hope this helps.

Ganito yun I bought last thursday a new smart sim buddy from smart wireless in they configure it thru internet connection so okay na.

What determines the speed of the connection is the signal strength and distance form the cellsite/transmitter.

Pwede kasing top of the line and celfone mo, pero nasa lugar ka na mahina ang signal at malayo/maraming obstractions between you and the cellsite, magigingmabagal pa ruin connection mo. yung lang and downside ng hsdpa, signal dependent ang service na ‘to.

to comment #28, nangyari na sa kin yan dati. yung feeling mo na disconnect mo na sa pc (thru nokia pc suite) pero sa phone mo may tiny indicator pa na maiiwan na nagsasabi nakaconnect ka pa sa 3g (the 3G with the line under)

to close the internet connection manually, go to the “Connection Manager” then select the connection there and press “Clear”.

pero tulad nga ng experiment mo (nice logic in turning off the phone after using to test the connection) kahit naka off parang may hindi bumitaw or hindi nakita ng SMART na nagdisconnect ka na sa internet.

sadly hindi nakakalaro (at least ng World of Warcraft) using SMART 3G. it’s either pure http browsing lang ang inallow nila at ilang streaming protocols.

at kung maglaro ka naman ng long period baka mag bog down phone mo sa high temperatures ng pag surf for long periods of time (and battery life din pala)

      Hi,
I’m also a smart 3g user. I asked smart a month ago. Nag-rerework daw ng network… Any info on when Smart 3g wil be back on track again or if it will actually improve via this “reworking of their network?) Alam ko na up to 2 megs/sec and max ng basic 3g kaya talagang network limitation ang 358 kbps na cinocommercial noon na ngayon ay much much less than that. What’s the use of 3.5G if we can’t even maximize basic 3G at 2 megs/sec?

I really have to confirm it too. I’m using the LG KU250 as an exclusive internet modem and I’m just wondering if the new hwawei USB modem is better o baka naman wawawei na ulit! There are times that the internet is fast BUT MOST OF THE TIME IT SO FREAKIN’ SLOOOOOOOW even if the signal bars are full.

I’m also keen in trying to ask if the NTC can look into this matter as it is already misleading and hassle to use their 3G network.

This maybe a dumb question, but does anybody know how many 3G-enabled cell sites does Smart have, and where they are?
