Number portability in Canada
April 4th, 2007 | by ka edong |A lady from Telus (a telco here in Canada) told me they’ve recently implemented country-wide number portability in Canada, effective March 15, 2007.
This means that people get to keep their cellphone numbers even if they switch telcos or switch geographic locations. Number portability is possible only when Telcos agree to collaborate. All of Canada’s Telcos (Telus Mobile, Bell, Rogers, Fido and others) are in the agreement.
On the other hand, in the Philippines, mobile subscribers need to change cellphone numbers when we switch telcos. It’s even absurd how I need to change cellphone numbers if I switch from pre-paid to post-paid or vice-versa WITHIN the same telco. Also need to change numbers if I had an existing post-paid subscription and I wanted to avail of a new post-paid subscription that came with a free phone
Back in 2003, Globe recommended: get the new post-paid subscription and the free phone with new cell number, terminate the old post-paid subscription and cell number, then re-claim the old cell number after 3 months! Absurd, isn’t it?
