Create your own Friendster Status!

Friendster

There’s so much to discover about your friends through Friendster. I remember our high school reunion last year. One of our friends was sooooo updated with the whereabout, whatabouts, howabouts and whyabouts of our old classmates. And do you know how he stays up-to-date? Through Friendster, of course!

I’m not much of a Friendster person. But I’ve come up with something that we just might be able to SELL to Friendster. Mwahahaha! :D

Technobiography’s Most Popular Posts

June 24th, 2008

I gathered this information through the Alex King “Popularity Contest” plugin. I’m keeping this information for future reference because I’ll be resetting the counters.

Main reason I’m resetting the counters is because I want to publish the more recent most popular posts (instead of the historical most popular posts).

More specifically, this is an attempt to hide the historical data that shows that my Marian Rivera post is the most popular post ever in terms of comments! hahahaha ! (It’s a failed attempt, it turns out :-( ).

I will not regret resetting the counters, I promise myself :-) .

Now for posterity sake, here are the most popular posts from September 2005 to June 2008. drumrollll……

How’s the Weather, Frank?

June 22nd, 2008

I looked up the weather forecast for tomorrow. I’m wondering where typhoon Frank will be tomorrow and whether he’ll let me go to work in one dry piece.

Which reminds me, I wonder where the weatherman of Molave dorm, UP Diliman is. He used to track typhoons on a map that he posts at Molave. He puts updates on the map every few hours. I know he setup a weather website. One feature was “track your own typhoon” that lets people watch a typhoon’s movement just like he did back in Molave in the mid 90’s. I think he’s based in bicol state university now.

Anyway, here’s the lowdown from Pagasa, Issued at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, 22 June 2008:

Solar and Spring Powered Radio: Look Ma, No Batteries!

June 17th, 2008

When I was at my cousin’s flat last year, a gadget caught my attention. I recognized it from a magazine, I believe it was given a “design” award. This transistor radio has a transparent hard casing that gives the user a peek into the inner workings of the radio.

First source of energy is the small solar panel on the top side of the radio.

Great Find! TED Podcasts

June 13th, 2008

I stumbled upon a great collection of mp3 podcasts to listen to in my trip tonight. It’s a collection of TED talks from some of the “most fascinating people”.

Each year, TED hosts some of the world’s most fascinating people: Trusted voices and convention-breaking mavericks, icons and geniuses. The talks they deliver have had had such a great impact, we thought they deserved a wider audience. So now, for the first time, we’re sharing them with the world at large… Each week, we’ll release a new talk to inspire, intrigue and awaken the imagination. For best effect, plan to listen to at least three, start to finish. (They have a cumulative effect.) If you have a curious soul and an open mind, we think you’ll be hooked…

Excited to listed to Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson and other interesting folks.

Green Malls: SM’s Trash to Cash and Ayala’s Recyclables Fair

June 13th, 2008

It started with SM. They invited people to bring their recyclables to the SM parking lot on a specific saturday of the month. Recyclables were collected, some of the trash was converted into cash. And this was happening in all SM malls all around the country.

I’ve got umobile mail! Invites and umobile stories here

June 11th, 2008

I received my ümobile SIM today via courier delivered right at my office doorstep. The messenger tells me they’ve delivered a few hundred in Southern Manila and Southern Tagalog. They are expecting to deliver a thousand or more, lined up for the next many weeks. Thanks to codegiver and people scrounging around for invites and codes. (Read on to find out how to get an invite.)

The messenger tells me that the SIM is already activated, has P100 prepaid credit and that additional airtime load can be purchased online. I ask him whether it’s paid via credit card and he says he doesn’t know.

(I got a call from Leo of umobile customer service a few hours after I published this article. He said they’re investigating the observations I made about outgoing calls/text and the wapsite. He answered a few of my questions as well, noted by updates below. By the way, I haven’t received any of those text advertisements … yet! :D )

Update from Leo of umobile (June 12): Online loading is done via PayPal and what sounded like “e-Pin”. We can load also using any bancnet or megalink, I’m told. I also found out from the website that we can transfer load to other users.

Here’s what the package looks like.

Point of Sale Solution: Wireless Credit Card Swiper

June 11th, 2008

I was at Bolinao (see Bolinao photos here) last year. When it was time to pay, we couldn’t use our credit cards because the resort didn’t have a credit card terminal, sometimes known as a Point of Sale Machine, Credit Card swiper or in jologs terms, “kaskas”.

The cashier explained that they had just recently received their telephone line (a wireless phone) and that their application for the credit card POS was still pending.

I was thinking those wireless POS machines could come in handy in a place like this where phone lines and internet infrastructure isn’t as solid as in the main cities.

I had seen a wireless POS terminal at a Canada restaurant. But that one was wirelessly “connected” to its home-base within the restaurant.

Here is a wireless Credit Card POS used by PSI to collect seminar investments.

Job Hunting Kiosk from DOLE, POEA and OWWA

June 10th, 2008

I saw this Job Hunting kiosk at the Lower Ground floor of Robinson’s Galleria near Thai Kitchen and Yellow Cab.

Job Hunting Kiosk from DOLE, POEA, OWWA

It has a touchscreen monitor. It’s main menu shows various databases of job openings from government job placement agencies like the Phil-Job.Net, OWWA, DOLE, POEA, TESDA, PRC etc.

I searched the database of Phil-Job.Net . Not bad. I’m not sure how up-to-date the information is. I’m sure there are better job placement websites (monster.com, jobstreet.com, jobsdb.com) but hey, this could help kahit papaano.

If you’re at the mall and looking for employment opportunities, try the Job Hunting Kiosk, you just might find your next great opportunity there!

# 1.2.2 Step 2: Back up ALL your WordPress files
# 1.2.3 Step 3: Verify the backups
# 1.2.4 Step 4: Deactivate ALL your Plugins
# 1.2.5 Step 5: Ensure first four steps are completed

Hermps. Now I need to do some work arounds :-(
I contacted Phil who encountered a similar problem before.

Smart Link prepaid cards

June 9th, 2008

I wrote about Smart Link back in 2006. It is a service targetted for Filipino Seamen that allows them to make calls through a satellite phone wherever they are in the world, over land or over seas.

I found this poster at SM Baguio and was glad to see that Smart Link is very much alive. ;-) They have prepaid cards available at SM customer service desks. Prepaid card are available in denominations of P300, P500 and P1,000.

Want Gas? Get Prepaid! SEAOIL’s Pricelock gas promo

June 6th, 2008

[See article update, July 3: 2nd wave of SEAOIL's Pricelock gas promo]

Ayos ‘to, ah. Pre-paid na ang Gasolina! With the price of Gasoline going up up up, I sure could use some way to cushion the impact on my gasoline expense.

Below, you’ll find the full article about the SEOIL Prepaid card. It’s called “Price Lock” and the consumers are at the lucky winning end of this promot. Further below, there’s a little commentary from me and my friend who’s in the motoring business.

SEAOIL fixes gas price at P53.50 a liter through Prepaid Card

Prepaid Gas from SEAOIL

SEAOIL Philippines Inc., the largest independent retailer of petroleum products in the country, has introduced an industry-first prepaid card that pegs a customer’s gasoline purchase at P53.50 per liter.

Company officials explained that the Price Lock Prepaid Fuel Card can be used to buy 20 liters of gasoline (G5 X-treme and Unleaded) from any SEAOIL participating stations. The selling period is from June 10-22, 2008. Each card costs P1,070 and is valid for 10 weeks (June 10 up to August 16, 2008).

[See article update, July 3: 2nd wave of SEAOIL's Pricelock gas promo]

Since the price has been fixed, cardholders will have an easier time budgeting their fuel expenses as they will be insulated from further spikes in gasoline costs during the promo period.

In the less likely event of a price rollback also during the period, i.e. the price goes down to less than P53.50 a liter, SEAOIL will refund unused (unscratched) fuel prepaid cards.

The Price Lock Prepaid Fuel Card will be made available at the following participating SEAOIL stations: EDSA, Imelda Avenue, Maybunga, P.Tuazon, Pasig Boulevard, Commonwealth, Malabon, Merville, Paco, E. Rodriguez, Paraluman, Mindanao Avenue, Panaderos, Tandang Sora and Buendia.

Satellite selling sites:
1. Tiendesitas - June 20 to 21(5pm to 11pm)
- June 22 (11am to 5pm)
2. Shopwise - June 20 to 22 (1pm to 7pm)
3. Metrowalk - June 20 to 21 (5pm to 11pm)
4. Greenhills (Peri Peri, beside Teriyaki Boy Promenade) - ongoing daily till June 22 (1pm to 7pm)
5. Greenhills (V-Mall) - June 20 to June 22 (1pm to 7pm)

[See article update, July 3: 2nd wave of SEAOIL's Pricelock gas promo]

The card is valid for a single transaction only, which means customers should use up its entire 20-liter value since any unconsumed amount, such as a 19-liter purchase, will forfeit the remaining card value.

Only SEAOIL station attendants are authorized to scratch the silver coating of the prepaid card upon purchase and claim the same card after the customer fills up.

[See article update, July 3: 2nd wave of SEAOIL's Pricelock gas promo]

It’s interesting. It’s the first of its kind that I’ve heard of for a commodity that has such a volatile price.

My friend from the motoring industry has his take on the promo:

I think it’s very innovative and it’s a great campaign. The customer has everything to gain e. I like Seaoil’s (not Sea Oil) out-of-the-box thinking.

Some airlines already do this–order fuel for delivery at a future date with the price pre-determined now. I think it’s called hedging.

I guess it’s SEAOIL’s opportunity to reel in some new customers. In the past, there was really not much reason for motorists to adventure away from their usual gasoline station. But with the prices of gas hitting the ceiling, we all could use some help keeping the gas expenses to a minimum.

It’s a good promo they have here. The thing is, you’ll need to have a long pisi (pin money) to fully avail of this promo. 20 Liters of gasoline from P1,070 prepaid card can only bring you so far.

One way to make the most from this promo is to … buy many prepaid cards (that requires a lot of cash), keep them unused for a few weeks, then use them (or sell them) when the prices of gas go way beyond the P53.50 per liter. That maximizes the spread between prevailing price and the fixed pre-paid price.

Hmmmm….. opportunity knocks!

Apple Mac Book Air - Super Thin, as in!

June 4th, 2008

My friend T came to the restaurant for the birthday celebration. She had a shoulder bag with her.

She decided to do some work, so she opened her shoulder bag and brought out what looked like a thin, sleek, silver …. folder!

I saw the apple logo on top and exclaimed: “Is that THE Apple Mac Book Air?!”

It was soooo thin, it looked like a folder.

Now I understand the significance of the Mac Book Air being packaged inside a short brown Manila Envelope: To emphasize how thin the Mac Book Air is. Do you know of any other laptop with 15″ 13″ monitor that can fit in a short Manila envelope?

Here are some photos of the Mac Book Air, also compared to a Sony Ericsson phone and a IBM Thinkpad. Note that the Thinkpad monitor is lifted up, so the thickness seen in the photo is already half of the think pad thickness — and the Mac book is thinner than half of the Thinkpad!

MAc Air Book

Some remarks on the Apple Mac Book Air

Great form-factor they have in that Mac Book Air! Do we expect anything less from Apple?

Battery life, I hear, isn’t so good at around 2 hours.

When my friend T is done with her Mac Book Air, she just flips closed the MacBook and puts it in her bag — no logging out, no hibernate, no shutting down. When she opens the lid of the Mac Book Air, it boots almost instantly and it’s good to go.
