3G video calling

Lance, the 3G demo guy of Globe, had two phones: a Nokia N90 and a Nokia N70. I chose to use the N90 because I’ve used the N70 at Smart last month.
It took around 4 attempts before we had a video call going. It was mostly a user problem (that’s me!) I couldn’t figure out which buttons to press to receive the call and to initiate the video from my phone to Lance’s phone.
Just like before, the audio wasn’t clear. It’s not easy doing a video call and speaker phone at the same time in a noisy place. Tendency is to keep your face around 8 inches from the phone for better video. But this is too far to hear the audio of the speakerphone.
Later on when Lance took out a headset, it made all the difference. My conclusion: video calls in public is best when using a headset.
Twist that camera
Something I found out during the demo. Both N90 and N70 phones had video for both front of phone and back of phone.
What gives? You could show your caller either your own face (camera facing yourself) or your environment (camera facing away from you).
Convenient for showing off … hehehe.
But I’m sure there are unlimited conveniences for this camera function. The N90, in particular, had a swivel camera (and a swivel clam-shell top). That phone is like a contortionist, twisting in every way.
Video quality
Grainy. I don’t know if it was a function of the camera. But comparing my video call via Smart and the one via Globe, the latter was grainier. Maybe also because Lance was doing a lot of motion with his camera and was in a darker area than my friend at Smart.
