3G live TV streaming video

Next up on the 3G demo with Globe: after video calls, we tried out streaming video from ABS-CBN and ANC.
It took a couple of attempts (around 5 tries) to connect to the network. A couple of times, I would hear a 1 second audio, recognizable as a news broadcast of ABS-CBN. But the video didn’t come through.
Finally, we got ANC to work. I watched an interview by Ariel Ureta of a beauty queen. The video was good, I would say, for a mobile phone. It was a live broadcast we were watching, including all the advertisements in between. We were connected for maybe 10 minutes.
Audio was clear. Video was recognizable but with some refresh time, I estimate around 3-8 frames per second.
Not bad for streaming video on a phone! There were times that the video would pause. The phone was buffering the video.
Later on, Lance showed me a video clip from Pacquiao’s latest bout. At first I thought the video was cached inside the phone’s memory – that’s a huge cache to keep those videos. But it turns out the clips were stored in a Globe server.
Not bad. Not bad at all. Until you hear how much it costs! Hahahaha! I’m sure it will be expensive especially in the first launch of the service to the public. As for indicative prices, I couldn’t get any figures from Lance. He did say that they’ll probably come out with rates by the end of this year … or maybe within the 2nd quarter, he added.
G-TV wasn’t affordable enough when it was launched almost two years ago. Will 3G services be affordable enough for the regular subscriber? We wait and see …
Tomorrow: web-surfing on mobile phone via the 3G network
By the way, Happy Valentine’s Day from my side of the internet to your side of the internet.

[…] The live 3G streaming videos from ABS-CBN and ANC were quite good. If streaming video was good, I should expect a good Internet connection as well. […]
