Messed up Smart Money messages

February 14th, 2006 | by ka edong |

Every now and then, I get a message alert that appear to be SpaSMS (unsolicited SMS messages). Upon further inspection, they turn out to be legitimate messages from my telco, not to say that I agree with what they’re doing and how they’re doing it. Here’s a sequence of messages from Smart…

From out of the blue, I got a message last year, around November 2005. I receive something like:

Free Alert: Your account has been debited P200 for you annual fee. This is a free message.

At first I was spaced out. Where is this message coming from? What for? I later concluded that it was my Smart Money account charging me for an annual fee (that just isn’t sulit!). Note that the message was not labelled as coming from Smart Money. I remember this distinctly.

In January 2006, I tried to make a balance inquiry of my Smart Money account via my Addict Mobile SIM STK. I was planning to use my Smart Money in Robinson’s Galleria for a trial m-commerce purchase.

This is the response I received:

20Jan 2008: Your account is not ready for activation. Please call SMART Money hotline. Ref:740089060417 SM:1080

Ah, da hill wid it! If my account has been deactivated, bahala sila!

What’s weird is this message I received just ten days later:

Jan 30, 2006
SMART FREE ALERT:We would like to inform you that the P200 Annual Loyalty fee has been debited from ur acct. Thank you for keeping your Smart Money acct active.

So, is my account active or not? Active when they want to charge me a *loyalty* fee (what’s a loyalty fee????!!!!). Inactive when I make a balance inquiry? And how many times should I pay that P200 annual fee? … uh, twice a year? hehehe.

da hil wid it, da hil sa yo

p.s. Come to think of it, seems like Text Exclusion has worked for me. I haven’t been having any/many SpaSMS (unsolicited SMS messages) lately.

hi edong! do you also get those messages telling you that won 100T AND a Toyota Altis? My dad got this message yesterday and I just told him to ignore it. I know there are people who get duped by these txt scams. What do the networks do about these? or are they doing anything at all?

      Hi Joy!

no, i didn’t get that message. But if i get the car, I’ll let you know! ;-)

Smart has a campaign: “Panalo o panloloko“. But I think it doesn’t have enough teeth to bite back the scammers.
