Telemedicine

What is telemedicine? Taking medicing through the telephone? Making telebabad with a doctor?

Telemedicine is a generic term for conducting medical processes/procedures remotely. This means that the doctor and the patient are not face to face when the medical procedure is conducted.

For example, a doctor in the city can provide diagnostic support for a doctor in the province through photos of the patient’s medical case.

In the Philippines, telemedicine saw action lately. An X-ray film in Capiz was photographed using a 3Megapixel camera and then sent to UP-PGH for reading.

Neat, huh? The thing is, the radiologist at the other end of the email cannot be accountable for the reading. The local radiologist will still be accountable to the patient. The local radiologist is still the one who makes the official reading, but with the assistance of the expert in UP-PGH.

Good enough. This will be good for remote areas like Batanes where there isn’t any radiologist.
