Prepaid in the Philippines

I got a message from Tin Abu asking about prepaid cards usage in the Philippines. Tin writes:

Hi! I’m doing a study on prepaid cards for the Phils and was wondering if you would have any data as to the usage, average amounts reloaded and frequency of reloading for local prepaid cards or even for g-cash, etc? I don’t think the customer service reps of the companies would have such data off the bat…

Here was my response which I sent to him last week:

Hi tin,

First, I’d like to know more about your research. What country do you come from? For what purpose is your research? Would you provide me a copy of your finished product when it’s done?

Second, I wouldn’t have any official data.
But I could share you some anecdotal information, just from my personal observation.

> data as to the usage,
approx more than 80% of cellphone subscribers are pre-paid subscribers. Most pre-paid subscribers use electronic load. Only the “richer” subscribers would use pre-paid cards (P100, 200, 300, P500 denominations).

> average amounts reloaded
as for electronic load, I am rather positive that the amount most often loaded is around P25-30 (around half a US$).

> and frequency of reloading for local prepaid cards
an ordinary subscriber doing the P25-30 reloads would reload every 2-3 days or so.
Of course there would be some who would be loading P100 and use it all up in a day or two.
There are some who would turn on their cellphone and have zero load (just to receive calls or texts).

> or even for g-cash, etc?
no averages I could positively declare.

> I don’t think the customer service reps of the companies would have such data off the bat…
scout around at the infotech section of inq7.net . go look into the archives. they come out with stories everynow and then containing press-release statistics coming from the telcos.

Goodluck.
