Here is a little update with G-Cash. I have a couple of stories about G-Cash.
First story is about a Sunshine Grocery in Baguio.
There is a popular grocery here in Baguio been there since my childhood-it’s called “sunshine”. and in that grocery there is a streamer that says that you can pay via G-Cash at their cashier. This is all good I’ve been writing about having G-cash in every other store-pervasiveness of G-Cash.
The thing with G-Cash in Sunshine is the streamer has been up for many months now [maybe 2, 3 or more months]. But last time I was in Sunshine I asked the cashier “pwede ba akong magbayad using G-Cash?”. The cashier looked around looking for her supervisor and asked the nearby cashier.”Mabalin? Pwede ba ang G-Cash dito?” They were not familiar with the service, they don’t know how to transact G-Cash. Apparently the G-Cash payment at Sunshine hasn’t picked up.
That’s a grocery store here in Baguio.
My second story is about SM Dasmariñas in Cavite.
I live in the area in SM Dasmariñas and one time I was buying a shirt at SM and asked the cashier “pwede bang magbayad using G-Cash?”. And then after a little hesitation she said “opo, pwede po”
By the way G-Cash payments are available in all SM malls around the Philippines.
So I asked her “Marami bang nagbabayad using G-Cash?” the cashier said “Sir wala pa po, kung magbabayad kayo ngayon kayo po ang pinakauna.” I asked her “sigurado ka? matagal na yun ah?” she said “Opo, nirereport naman un tuwing nagmimeeting kami at wala pang gumagamit ng G-Cash dito.”
So that’s interesting. G-cash in SM has been available for more than a year. I’ve written about it so I’ll be able to verify how long G-cash has been in SM. But it’s been more than a year-maybe one and half year already.
And in SM Dasmariñas nobody has used it-nobody has paid G-cash in SM Dasmariñas. reason because it’s easier to pay with cash.
Third Story: Load, Autoload via G-Cash
There is a streamer in Globe Telecom office here-business center. The streamer calls it a rebate, a 10% rebate. The rebate is if you load for example if you load 500 pesos worth of cellphone load and if you load it using G-cash. You will receive 500 pesos worth of load but it will cost only 450 pesos of G-cash. Therefore you are able to save 50 pesos or 10% of G-cash if you use G-cash loading.
Interesting business. That’s something people could use, something that Globe people could use.
Those are my 3 G-Cash stories.

So you live in Pala-pala, Dasma? Hmm, I live in nearby Silang.
Anyways, G-cash usage in this part of the province is very rare. Most of the time, friends I know would ask,”Gumagana ba talaga yan?” everytime they hear me talk about G-cash and how I use it to reload my phone credits.
Well, congrats on being the first G-cash user to actually use it in SM Dasma.

Yup. in the area.
G-cash is rarely used even in manila or makati.
Not many people use it, and not many people advocate its use. Not much word-of-mouth marketing there ….

Edwin, it has always been a bit of a chicken and egg situation for mobile payment platforms in all parts of the world. From my experience, it is getting more widespread in the Philippines but is mostly being used to send money domestically from one part of the Philippines to another or to convert GCash to load and get back 10%. In fact, one most people learn that they actually do get 10% back from GCash2Load, I don’t know why most of the 16 million plus prepaid Globe and TM Philippines wouldn’t start using this offer right away.
It will also be easier to convert cash to GCash once banks make it easier to withdraw remotely from a bank account to your mobile wallet. Several rural banks started to offer this service in June this year and BPI will be offering it quite soon. I do agree though, you need to see certain economies of scale before m-transactions reach the “tipping point!” I do think we are beginning to see some momentum though.

About the 10% rebate — isn’t this a promo?
This (in essence) is what I was advocating when I wrote about the direction G-Cash should take. See part (c) of this article:

The difference is,
a “distributor” in my earlier article is rewarded with 14% *load*.
whereas the current scheme of G-Cash rewards the distributor with 10% “rebate” of G-Cash.
That’s a great business proposal. More people should start using that! Maybe it’s a matter of marketing the service.

Actually, GCash2Load has picked up with a lot of people, precisely because of the rebate. It was even written about by the AP. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21069796/
As for its availability in the banks, you can load your GCash wallet through any Bancnet ATM, along with BPI. You can also cash out through BPI.

i use gcash mainly for paying for things i buy sa ebay, convenint sana kasi u can just text d payment. kaso hassle ung pupunta pa ng globe para mgpaload, and the guard always asks “ma’am may id po kayo” hay. wish there was a way i can load my gcash online, like maybe transfer funds from my atm to my gcash. now that would be just super. or maybe i’m just lazy.

Gcash might cause a great decrease in the number of customers for us autoload retailers. Examining the situation, individuals won’t come to autoload retailers anymore since they can reload themselves with the gcash to load service. In any case, in the area where I’m retailing. It does not seem to be popular right now, i fear for the time it would and the decrease in autoload sales would have a great impact on us autoload retailers.

at multiply, most online shops and customers alike prefer gcash over any modes of payment because it is very convenient. They dont have to queue in banks pa for deposit.
GCash is acutally a breakthrough, however id like globe to have accounts over the internet so we could log our gcash transactions (mobile banking). and i hate it when at times, gcash is offline

We’ve seen GCASH pick up in recent years. So, I’m sure Globe will continue to innovate on the user experience, maybe even enabling viewing of GCASH history online.
On the note about Multiply, I’ve talked to some people who use GCASH, but who didn’t know that you can easily transfer your GCASH to your BPI account and vice versa. I find it very convenient, personally, so I don’t have to go to the bank. The Bancnet execution, I believe, is only for cash in. But the BPI one allows for GCASH to BPI account transfers using your phone.

A BPI guy sent me a globe sim so I can try their mobile banking services.
Now if only i have an extra handset so i can use that sim

Right. We have similar thoughts.
What you can do, in the meantime, is “sell” your load via pasaload.
Then convert the cash in your hands into G-Cash (via G-cash partners).
