Blue boy in a blue toilet

December 15th, 2005 | by ka edong |

There were a couple of public toilets in Sydney that were illuminated by blue light. I remember reading about these blue lights. I remember that they were a deterrent against drug use. I first was thinking “maybe it’s difficult to sniff cocaine under blue light”.

But I recalled later on that with blue light, it’s difficult to find a vein on your arm. This makes it quite a challenge to pierce one’s self with a syringe. This keeps away syringe totting drug addicts from using the public toilets to feed their addictions.

That’s an elegant solution – simple yet effective.

Tambay Deterrent

Here’s another elegant solution one I recall reading. In European countries, some homeless people sleep in subway stations and other public places. What did management do to stop the homeless from staying in subway stations?

Piped in classical music!

Yup yup (that’s what I read). Homeless people hate classical music! They hate it so much that they would get up and leave.

Elegant solution – simple yet effective.

Yeah, but doesn’t the blue light also highlight the urine and feces stains? Yuck!

As my mom says in Filipino: “Hinahanap mo kasi, kaya nahahanap mo. ”
Translation: You find what you look for.
