The cellphone as a translator

October 17th, 2005 | by ka edong |

I loved the interaction I had with the South African locals when I would blurt out broken phrases of their language. It never failed to bring a smile to their faces. They appreciate that I am trying to communicate through their language, and not force them to communicate in English.

I dream of a cellphone that can translate words for me. I dream of a cellphone which can receive my words in English and translate these for me in any language I choose. I just have to put on my phone’s loudspeakers and my phone will “speak” to my foreign counterpart in his local language.

I dream of a cellphone that can listen to a foreign language and whisper to me the message of that foreign language.

This is communicating, isn’t it? This is telecommunications at its best!
