Stories and Questions: Pinoy IT Professionals in Singapore

Filed under Edong's Dreams, ICT Industry.

I have this oft told series of three four stories about Pinoy IT professionals in Singapore…

Part I:

We had dinner with friends - college orgmate and a cousin of mine. They found out that they were working in the same IT company in Singapore. They’ve been working in IT companies for a couple of years in the Philippines, have common friends, have some common clients, and then found out that evening that they were working in the same company.

Part II:

When I found out that there were many Pinoy IT professionals in their company I asked, “Ilan kayong Pinoys sa company niyo?”

Orgmate replied, “Sa floor pa lang namin, 800!”

Whoa! 800!

Part III:

I brought these stories home and told another friend who’s in HR of one of the biggest IT consultants in the world. She shared that the IT brain drain was one of the biggest challenges facing of HR practitioners in the Philippines.

“How can the we retain the IT professionals in the Philippines when jobs in Singapore, HK, US pay more than P80,000 per month! We really need to get creative in finding a good package for our IT professionals.”

Part IV:

And then I told this to a blogger friend who had his stint in Singapore. He says he still continues to keep his options open even while he works here in the Philippines. He says that he gets as many as 3 to 5 job offers per year through his online applications for IT positions in Singapore. He gets offers to the tune of P80,000 per month with 14th month pay pa!

What will keep IT professionals in the Philippines?
Is that even the right question to ask?

go to singapore as tourist armed with return tickets (huwag 1-month, halata nila yun). however, your main enemies will be the immigration officers. you need to produce evidence that you are employed in RP and that you’re coming back. daanin mo sa pakiusap kung kailangan. when in singapore, you need a place to stay, a friend’s place maybe. then skim around employment agencies for vacancies. lastly, cross your fingers and hope that your short sojourn will bear fruit.

this advise is based from most SG-OFW’s experience.

      cheers

Hi! Unless you have plans to go to Singapore, I would not be overly optimistic about going there for the sole purpose of finding a job. I suggest that you apply on-line first and make plans when there are positive indicators.

      Hi Louie Victor,

Thanks for the advice, hope readers take that into consideration.

I do have a number of friends who just jumped the gun and went there to apply in person. Some lucky, some not.

But for those who weren’t so lucky, they came out as persons enriched (not monetary) and with a better view of the world, nevertheless.

To those hoping to find a job in Singapore, try to apply online first and see if the number of responses convinces you to do so. Try www.recruit.net,jobsdb/sg,jobstreet/sg sites. A tip, try to use another account on these sites and put a Singapore address on your resume but don’t indicate that your are not a PR (permanent resident), just leave it blank and create a dummy email for it.Note: dont’ use your real name for the dummy account. This is for you to see how SG employers respond to your qualifications using diff name. And see if it has positive responses. These will really help your decision of flying to singapore

    17. ka edong on 12 Feb 2008 at 7:17 pm: 17

You have an interesting strategy there, sepi.
looks like it worked well for you ;-) .

btw, visit www.eofw.net , you might find it useful.
