Last part of our 3G demo with Globe was surfing the Internet on a laptop using a 3G phone for a modem.
I’ve done this before with Brosia connected to Kurdapia. I was able to connect via dial-up using Brosia, my Smartphone. (The cheaper way to connect is through a GPRS connection and not via dial-up).
But this time around with the Nokia N70 and N90, the 3G network is expected to be many times faster than my old dial-up experiments.

It’s going to be exciting to have a 3G phone.
As an initial public offering, Smart launched its free 3G services for its subscribers in key cities around the Philippines. Yup, all free! For a limited period, subscribers with 3G phones will be able to do video calls (Smart-to-Smart), streaming video, high-speed Internet and more.

The live 3G streaming videos from ABS-CBN and ANC were quite good. If streaming video was good, I should expect a good Internet connection as well.
The first two times we tried to connect to the Internet via the 3G phone, a notification would say something like “connecting to the server”. Then, after ten seconds or so …

Lance, the 3G demo guy of Globe, had two phones: a Nokia N90 and a Nokia N70. I chose to use the N90 because I’ve used the N70 at Smart last month.
It took around 4 attempts before we had a video call going. It was mostly a user problem (that’s me!) I couldn’t figure out which buttons to press to receive the call and to initiate the video from my phone to Lance’s phone.
Just like before, the audio wasn’t clear.

Smart has a campaign against scam SMS messages. They have posters aimed at increasing awareness on how to distinguish between legitimate contest announcements and scam messages promising big winnings.
Nicey nice. But …. hmmmm …. what’s the definition of lip service?
