Vendo Vavoom – Internet
October 7th, 2005 | by ka edong |My second Vendo story is from our trip to Singapore. Singapore can’t help but be connected. And it shows with the numerous vendo internet kiosks all around the place.
There were a couple of these vendo Internet kiosks at our hotel lobby (Hotel Grand Central at Orchard Road). They are stand-alone, no supervision needed. I guess the location in itself (a hotel lobby) is security enough.
There’s vendo internet kiosk has a coin slot. It’s costs 1 Singapore dollar (Php 32) per fifteen minutes. It has an LCD display that counts down your remaining Internet time. At around 5 or 3 minutes left, a buzzer will sound to warn you of your time.
When time is up, the keyboard and the mouse freezes. You have to make sure to close your email and anything confidential or private before your time is up. Otherwise, the next user will see all the windows you left open. If so, you’ll just have to flick another 1 dollar to ligpit your windows for another 15 mins.
Nice, huh? A bit expensive, considering that there are WiFi hotspots all over Singapore. But the vendo internet kiosks are convenient for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who visit Singapore every year.
Check it out next time you’re in Singapore.

hi edong,
this is my first time visit ur site. pretty cool and quite informative. id like to comment on this article which u posted regarding ur internet usage in singapore. normally we already have it here in phils…applicable to internet station…some internet station here have not that numerous attendant to monitor their customers so they just simply put up this gadget to control the mouse and the keyboard and a buzzer to serve as a signal for the customer that their time gonna end soon (5min)…

Yup, I have a thesis idea.
Create an automated system that allows G-Cash users to send credits (not load) to Smart Padala users (and vice-versa).
In essence, it’s a money-changer for two m-commerce “islands” that prior to your project, (naks!) have not communicated with each other.
